We love to cook and bake outdoors, especially in our dutch ovens. On a recent camping trip, we baked a batch of Monkey Bread in the dutch oven for our brunch. They were so easy to make and turned out so yummy! This dutch oven Monkey Bread recipe is a great one to make with kids since they can help roll the dough balls and shake the bag of spices to coat the dough balls. Little A is only four years old and she had a blast helping to make the Monkey Bread! The weather is still pretty chilly around here since it is only early spring in Montana but that doesn’t stop us from going camping or baking in our dutch ovens! On our recent camping trip, we built a campfire first thing in the morning so we could sit nearby to stay warm as the sun rose and the day warmed up a bit. We used our campfire to heat up the charcoal briquettes and opened up one side of our campfire ring to place the coals and the dutch oven while it baked.

In case you’re new here, you might have missed our tips on how to bake off grid in a dutch oven, how we love to bake most of our Thanksgiving dinner outdoors in dutch ovens and even baked our pies in the dutch ovens outside when the temperature was in the 20’s outside! We have more dutch oven recipes we love to bake that we’ll be sharing on the blog over the next few months so stay tuned for more recipes.

Dutch Oven Monkey Bread Recipe

Our Monkey Bread recipe uses all ingredients that are made from scratch. A lot of Monkey Bread recipes out there have you buy pre-made dough packed in cans at the grocery store (and they’re also packed with lots of icky ingredients and preservatives!)

We prefer to make our food from scratch so this recipe uses homemade dough. This dough is super easy to make and is actually the dough we also use for making homemade pizza. Since our homemade dough recipe makes a large batch, we had enough dough to bake our Monkey Bread, a big dough ball to take on our camping trip to make dutch oven pizza (recipe coming soon!) and one big dough ball to stick in the freezer at home for a future meal. Here’s our recipe for making the homemade dough.

Supplies needed:
14″ Dutch oven with legs

-charcoal briquettes or hot coals

-parchment paper (this is the kind we use since it is unbleached)

Ingredients:
-bread dough from this recipe

-1/2 cup sugar

-1/2 cup brown sugar

-3 TBS cinnamon

-6 TBS butter sliced into thin pieces

Directions:
1. Pour the cinnamon, sugar and brown sugar into a gallon size plastic bag. We like to use a zip top bag to get a good seal on top before shaking so we don’t end up with a big mess.

2. Tear the dough apart and roll into small balls about 1″ in size. Place the dough balls inside the plastic bag.

3. Shake the dough balls around in the plastic bag until well coated.

4. Line the dutch oven with parchment paper. This will make clean up a breeze!

5. Remove the sugary dough balls from the plastic bag and spread them out on the bottom of the parchment paper lined dutch oven.

6. Place the slices of butter evenly over top of the dough balls.

7. Cover the dutch oven and bake about 350 degrees for 30-40 minutes. Rotate the dutch oven about half way through the baking to ensure even baking.

8. When they’re done, enjoy! We even had some left over that we ate a few hours later for an afternoon snack and they still tasted delicious.

FAQs

Why is my monkey bread not rising? ›

If the yeast you're using is expired, chances are your bread will not get a good rise (if any) from it. Yeast is a microorganism and does have a definite life span. For best results, always use yeast before the “best by” date. To make sure it is ready to go, always proof yeast before adding it to your bread dough.

What is the best size Dutch oven for bread making? ›

You just need a lid to cover it and the proper heat-conducting cast-iron material, and your bread will come out perfectly every time. Size & Shape: Look for a 6- to 7-quart, round Dutch oven. Anything much bigger will cause the bread to spread out and go flat.

What temperature do you bake bread in a Dutch oven? ›

Preheat your home oven to 450°F (230°C) with a Dutch oven inside for 30 to 45 minutes. Line a pizza peel, inverted baking sheet, or cutting board with parchment paper. Turn out your proofed bread dough onto the parchment paper (trim the paper to fit, if necessary) Score your dough.

How do you cook in a Dutch oven? ›

Fill your dutch oven no more than halfway with oil and then heat to your recipe's prescribed temperature. Submerge your ingredients in the heated oil until cooked, then rest them on a paper towel or wire rack to remove excess oil.

Why doesn't my bread rise enough? ›

Add more yeast, blend in the starter, or knead in more flour to help initiate rising. Dough that has expired yeast, too much salt, all-purpose or cake flour, or antifungal spices like cinnamon might have trouble rising.

Why didn't my bread rise enough? ›

Yeast is too cold If the other ingredients are too cold, it could cause some of the yeast to die. Was the dough kneaded properly? Dough may not have been kneaded enough. Kneading 'exercises' the gluten in the bread and gives it the elasticity to hold in the air bubbles produced by the yeast.

Why is my Dutch oven bread so hard? ›

Any tips for preventing a thick, hard crust on the bottom of my bread done in a Dutch oven? Make sure you are using a heavy gauge Dutch oven and that it isn't too close to the bottom heat element in your oven. If you are still getting a thick, hard crust, you can put a pillow of foil down, like this.

Why is my Dutch oven bread dense? ›

Why is my bread dense: Usually bread will be too dense when there is too much flour. Keep in mind this dough will be pretty sticky, do not add more flour than specified. Other factors that come into play are humidity and age of flour. Little yeast, long rise, sticky dough are keys to a good, light loaf.

Should you preheat a Dutch oven for bread? ›

But it goes beyond simply placing your kneaded and risen dough in the pot that goes into the oven. For bread results that can rival those of any professional bakery, you'll actually need to preheat your Dutch oven.

Do you preheat a Dutch oven with the lid on? ›

The most common method is: Preheat Dutch oven in the oven with the lid off at 500F/260C. Many bakers will continue preheating for 10-20 minutes after the oven reaches target temperature to ensure the Dutch oven is at its hottest. Lower the loaf into the Dutch oven using a sling made of parchment or silicone.

How do you keep bread from burning in a Dutch oven? ›

Fixed this problem entirely by just putting an empty sheet pan on the rack below the Dutch oven. The issue is that the base of your Dutch oven is getting too much direct heat from the element, but adding a buffer will solve it.

Do you cover a Dutch oven when baking? ›

It doesn't matter if you use an enamel-coated cast-iron Dutch oven or a traditional black cast-iron Dutch oven. As long as you have a lid to cover it, the bread comes out perfectly every time.

What is a Dutch oven trick? ›

You fart, under some blankets, then pull the blankets over someone's head, thereby trapping them and the fart in a contained space for a short time. The Dutch Oven is also a cookpot meant to be buried in hot coals for long, slow cooking.

Can you bake in a Dutch oven on the stove? ›

Traditional cast-iron dutch ovens are sturdy and durable. They should be seasoned before they are used and should only be cleaned with hot water. Just like their enameled counterparts, traditional cast-iron dutch ovens can be used on the stovetop or in the oven.

Can I still bake my bread if it didn't rise? ›

If your dough didn't rise, the yeast is probably dead. This could be because the yeast was old, or because the water you bloomed it in was too hot. You can still bake the dough but don't expect the same flavor.

How do you force bread to rise? ›

A Bowl of Steaming Water is the Key to Quickly Proofing Bread. In the winter, when your house and kitchen are at a crisp temperature and you need a warm spot for your dough to rise, create a makeshift “proof box” by placing a bowl of steaming water inside your oven alongside your bowl of dough.

Why is my friendship bread not rising? ›

Keep it warm!

Cold kitchens are a bane to any Amish Friendship Bread starter or sourdough starter, especially if you're trying to rise dough. Keep the dough warm and draft-free.

What temperature kills yeast? ›

Too Hot to Survive

Regardless of the type of yeast you use, if your water reaches temperatures of 120°F or more, the yeast will begin to die off. Once water temps reach 140°F or higher, that is the point where the yeast will be completely killed off.
