Our Story. Gannett was founded by Frank Earnest Gannett, who incorporated the company in 1906. By the early 2000s, Gannett was publishing more than 100 newspapers. Today, Gannett publishes USA TODAY along with hundreds of local media outlets across the United States, and over 150 news brands in the United Kingdom.
It was taken over by Clarence Barron in 1902, who passed it down after his death to the Bancroft family in 1928. Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation purchased Dow Jones & Company from the Bancrofts in 2007 for $5 billion or $60 per share.
