Can anyone share their experience with BLW? I'm interested to try it but everyone I talk to about it seems so surprised/confused. I even mentioned it to our pediatrician the other day and he wasn't against it, but he seemed to not really know too much about it. I'm just curious how it has gone for others.

I did BLW with my now 2.5 year old and am excited to do it again with this baby. We started some purées at 4 months after the pediatrician said we could try and he took to that well then at 6 months we dove right in to BLW. Definitely a little scary at first, but it also makes things easier moving forward. I always gave him whatever we were having and just served it appropriately in terms of size etc. We also did all the major allergens right away. When doing allergens, do one at a time and at least a few days apart so you know what would be causing a reaction, if anything. Solid Starts and BLW Meals are both great phone apps! Very informative in terms of foods, how to serve at different ages, recipes etc. I don’t pay for their subscriptions or anything - there’s still so much information you can get from them without one. Do your research on the difference between choking and gagging and of course always keep an eye and be prepared. When we first started BLW, I only let him have food if I was around so no one else (other than my husband) was allowed to feed him. To this day, I still approve how his food is prepared (rightfully so) - I’ve seen too many choking hazards/fruit/candy not prepared for other kids in the family by numerous people. Let them get messy and explore with flavors and textures! Food is really just for fun until the age of one - breastmilk/formula is still their main form of nutrients until then. My son is a snack monster now, but he started off as his favorite food being steak and eating lobsters on vacation Let me know if you have any specific questions!

I was planning on doing mostly purées with my first, but she just wasn’t interested in them. I spent the first month or so trying to spoon feed her or letting her self feed purées and she was just not eating at all. A friend had recommended Solid Starts, so I started offering age appropriate servings to her. We were traveling in Florida when she was 7 1/2 months and it was really a turning point because she was grabbing for everything we were eating. After that point, we stopped with the purées (except for the occasional mash/pouch) and just started feeding her all types of food. I honestly consulted solid starts several times/day to determine the appropriate preparation and size. It was soooo helpful. She turned into an amazing eater. We’re now dealing with some toddler pickiness, but she’s still a foodie for sure! I’m looking forward to baby led weaning with this baby, but I’ll likely try purées and mashes and just see what she likes.

I did blw! Look into how to cut foods especially the high risk for choking ones like grapes! everything should be soft enough to smash, no circle shapes, etc.
I love BLW! The only downfall is a big mess.
The chances of choking aren’t any higher than puréed food, as long as it’s prepared correctly, but the gagging can freak you out at first. Gagging is a normal reflex all babies have! To feel more confident, I got educated on what to do if my infant really started choking.

I highly recommend downloading the solid starts app! It gives you ways you should cut the food properly and has tons of research articles on BLW!

We did it with our 2 year old and she STILL ended up being a picky toddler as of about 6 months ago we will still do a mix of BLW and purées for our November baby but personally I don’t think it makes a huge difference which route you choose, all kids will eventually be feeding themselves.
